What is Faith?

When you walk up a flight of stairs you believe that the step will hold your weight. That’s faith.

The words “faith alone” refer to the fact that God’s gracious gift of forgiveness (See What is Grace?) is received only through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. Some describe faith as the “hand” that receives the gifts of God. Martin Luther, who sparked the Reformation in 1517, once spoke of faith as the wedding ring that unites us with Jesus. Even faith itself is a gift from God, created within us by God’s Holy Spirit. Jesus pointed out that, “No one can come to Me [Jesus] unless the Father who sent Me draws him” (John 6:44).

Luther wrote, “Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that the believer would stake his life on it a thousand times.” The Bible, God’s Word, (See What is Scripture?) tells us we are put into a relationship with God not by our own efforts, but through the living, daring confidence that is Spirit-created faith.
