What is Grace?

Remember reading reports about strangers paying for someone else’s meal just because? That’s what grace looks like.
In the big picture, grace is the free and unearned favour of God. He could punish us for our constant rebellion against Him but instead He shows His grace to all sinful humankind (all of us) by offering salvation from the eternal punishment we deserve. And just like the strangers paying for meals, God, Himself, pays the price for our sins (eternal death) through the death of Jesus, His Son — just because He loves us!

Why is grace necessary? Face the facts, we are not perfect and we can’t become perfect through anything we do. It is only through God’s gift of forgiveness – given freely to us while we were still turned away from God – that He sees us as sinless and therefore worthy of His gift of salvation.

The words “grace alone” remind us that the forgiveness of sins is a gift of God’s grace, that is, His goodwill or favour toward undeserving sinners. Martin Luther, who sparked the Reformation in 1517, noted, ‘We are all beggars.” He was saying we can do nothing to earn God’s forgiveness because frankly we have nothing to offer in exchange! Luther explained that “grace signifies that favour of God which wishes us well and justifies us. That is, it freely grants us the faith which alone justifies us.” (To be justified means to be declared righteous, or holy, in the sight of God.) It means our sins—selfish, hurtful, immoral actions and attitudes that pit us against God—are forgiven, and we are placed into a right relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. God’s Word (the Bible) tells us: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2: 8-9).
